Reality vs. Dream

Assignment: Write about contrast using (twist) dialogue.

Friend: How are you?

Me: I’m fine. I feel very removed from the whole thing.  I’m not there so it doesn’t seem real.

Friend: But it IS real.  This is happening.

Me: Everything is going to be OK.

Friend: Adrienne, your uncle has cancer. This is a big deal. He is going to have chemotherapy and radiation. He is going to feel sick. He may have surgery. He may end up without a bladder.

Me: I know all this. I just don’t know how to make it feel real.

While the content above is true, this was not a “real” conversation that I had with a friend. It may be a virtual dialogue I would have in my head but it was never spoken. My uncle is a father to me. He taught me manners, gave me guidance throughout my life, and gave me away at my wedding. His name is Godfrey but we call him Cherry. Uncle Cherry has always been a constant in my life.  The thought of life without him – no matter how far apart we live – is not an acceptable reality. I will say I am staying positive, not living in denial.  I will say that I know the possible outcomes, but that I am an optimist.  All true, but when do I finally stop and say to myself, “You’re living in a dream.”
